CHEVROLET BIG BLOCK
TURNKEY ENGINE
$11,000
580 to 700bhp

This motor intended for street cruising and racing.
The AFR Heads and Hydraulic Roller Camshaft make this combination very effected at making serious power between 4500 to 6500rpm depending on camshaft duration.
With a smaller cam this combination is plenty quick with enough vacuum for power brakes and the AFR 305cc heads mean you don't need as much duration to make power as you would need with other heads.
Stepping up to the CNC ported 315 is worth about 50bhp.
A longer duration cam gives up vacuum to make over 580plus bhp in the mid to high 6000rpm range.
A solid roller cam makes maximum power, using bush lifters has made using solid rollers on the street reliable.

I build quite a few big blocks.

The most popular is the 489 (.030") or 496 (.060").

However a 503 using a 4.375 stroke works great. Somewhere below there is a video of an industrial engine I built using stock oval port heads. It made 540 torque at 2000 RPM and 616ft/lbs for peak torque. The horsepower was only 512, but it was at 4800RPM. While this is only a "pulling" engine in a car it would still be very quick.

The price is adjustable to some degree based on the parts used. Cast steel crank verse forged steel.  AFR CNC ported heads verse as cast iron heads. Real racing parts cost more

If I know how much money you want to spend, I can show you the options available to you.

The lowest cost turnkey 489 is about $7000.

I don't build "crate" engines which are pre-designed, each engine is unique and therefore the actual cost.

A Dart block motor set to rev over 7500rpm could cost as much as $22,000

My point is the actual cost of engine building and rebuilding is the sum of its parts and labor.

When it comes to big blocks I assume you are looking for big power.

As such and given I mostly talk street motors a 454 block can yell up to 650Hp and a Dart big bore block can make over 800Hp..

So as with any build the first question is "what are you willing to spend???"

Just like you I look around online to see what other builders are offering. I can match any of their prices, but not always their deliver time, as I don't keep partial engines just waiting an order for completion. I build all the engines myself, and seldom the same thing twice.

While I don't advertise it, I do build a 660cid motors. The short block is $6700. I requires specail fitted parts to complete, but it does bolt in same as a 396, but plan on custom made headers.

I also build over 700CID street motors. To do so I use block height extenders, custom made rods and billet crankshafts. 760CID short blocks cost over $10,000. I even rebuild GM performance engines. For example I'll add an 8-71 to their 502 engines.

The question "What will it cost?" should first be address with "How much are you willing to spend?" Then we can come up with a combination for you working together.

A typical 540 street build cost about $12,000 turnkey

A 540 with a short hydraulic roller cam with 315cc AFR heads will make 700Hp at 5500rpm and as much torque.
